MARTHA WALLULIS
BIOGRAPHY
Martha Wallulis is an interdisciplinary artist and painter currently based and living in Portland, Oregon. Her visual artwork includes painting in diverse media - oil, acrylic, encaustic wax, egg tempera, gouache, watercolor, multi-media, house paint, found and natural materials, sculpture - clay and plaster, carving, collage, assemblage, drawing - including work with charcoal, pastel, ink, graphite, conte.
In addition to her work as an artist, Ms. Wallulis is also an independent art dealer, curator, art consultant, art and music instructor, interior designer, and housepainter for both residential and commercial spaces. Her skills and experience include both interior and exterior painting, wallpaper hanging and removal, faux plaster, faux painting, metallics, mural painting, decorative painting, specialty painting, cabinets, flooring, art installation, framing, and professional curatorial services. Her curatorial projects include artist shows in many local venues, alternative spaces, small and large group shows, as well as juried artist shows in the Portland, OR area. She is also available for hire to install and curate private art collections in residential and commercial spaces, as well as gallery shows. Martha has a BFA in Painting from the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and a BA in Liberal Studies from Portland State University. In addition, she has studied Byzantine Music, Art, and Greek- both modern and ancient, with private instructors in both the U.S. and in Greece, where she stayed and studied both Greek Byzantine Chant and Iconography in a monastery on the beautiful island of Rhodes for several months.
Martha enjoys singing and performance. She continues to create, explore, and practice music in various ways including voice, instruments, interdisciplinary art, and creating and recording her own abstract, more experimental music as well. Her college education includes studies in music and vocal performance. She was a part of the Women's Chorale in Tampa, Florida where she studied at the University of South Florida, was accepted into the music program as a voice major, and planned on a focus on opera. After a move back to Portland, however, Martha directed her focus to completing her BFA at PNCA and started her study of Greek Byzantine Music at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where. her teachers included John Boyer, Sr. and John Michael Boyer. She was tonsured a Reader of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Martha Wallulis has worked and volunteered for many art and community organizations and programs including the Portland Art Museum, PNCA, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral and the Portland Greek Festival, HACCM, the Oregon Women's Caucus for Art, the Cascade AIDS Project Art Auction, Kows for Kids, and Camp Angelos where she was a staff member and taught both Liturgical Music and Arts & Crafts to the many participating youth. She taught at Vibe of Portland and Agia Sofia Academy, and has assisted at local art galleries including Mark Woolley Gallery, the Ford Gallery, Launchpad Gallery, Rake Gallery, People's Gallery, and the Darras.
