ARTIST STATEMENTS
INTO BLISS
Please note: I wrote this statement on the gallery wall at Worksound Gallery for the "Pretty Vacant" national artist group show... with a sharpie (and the gallery owner's permission). I was only able to find one photo of the statement in my archives which is blurry with tiny font - this is my best attempt thus far at deciphering it:
This work is about going inward.
A journey into the Core.
What is the Core? I define it as the core of one's heart, and soul, and experience. It is in the heart's core, I believe, that one meets with her or his true self.
My work's perspective is an attempt to draw the viewer in toward the infinite - an ever moving point forward in space and Time, or rather, what I call TimeSpace (or Space-Time in Physics terminology). The compositions extend outwards and inwards at once. The viewer's vantage point may be close or far at times, or even inside or outside. I often strive for an ambiguity which may allow either reading, experience, depending on the viewer.
The forms are ______, mainly. The associations are many. I am exploring the bulbous form in the first two paintings, similar to that found in the Tibetan dorje (or vajra). The association was not intentional at the time of the initial creations of it in my work. It is a cage-like form which has both positive and negative connotations. This bulbous, spherical form in paintings 1 and 2 has come to symbolize my own Core and therefore possesses autiobiographical elements.
In painting 2, From Within My Cage, the viewer may be inside or outside of the Cage. This multiple perspective play is of great interest to me. It is also explored in painting 1, Inside Caverns Open, where the _____ _______ looks both rock-like and mountainous. _______ ___ ____ may be either from very close (as in sitting on rocks in a cave) or from far (similar to an aerial view from a plane). It is the viewer's role (and perhaps responsibility) to experience and think about the work through her or his own eyes.
Painting 3, Into Bliss, is a reference to Joseph Campbell. Campbell urged artists and non-artists* alike to "follow their bliss". These paintings have been a tremendous and incredible journey for me, leading to this piece, Into Bliss, which for me is pure joy - the bliss of painting and of being an artist, and working not only as an artist, but with as many phenomenal and talented artists in an ever growing family and community. I thank you from the bottom of my heart, or rather ~ my Core, for sharig this experience with me and viewing, experiencing my paintings.

TRANSFORMATIONS SERIES - STAY TUNED! NEW WORK and upcoming ONLINE EXHIBITION!
XAPA SERIES! - "XAPA is Greek for "JOY"! There is also a lovely Greek song titled XAPA! which is very important to me in my life.
FREQUENCIES SERIES
CROSSOVER SERIES - This series is about the "crossover" in relationships. Where does one end and another begin? Where do we cross over? What is shared, what is unique to the individual, what is formed in the space created? What do we share in the crossover and what is in the individual's space(s)? The positive? The negative? Stay tuned for more works and writing about this series. One of the first works entitled "Fotyies" (Greek for "fires") also is my response to terrible and heartbreaking fires which occurred in Greece.
CROSS SERIES - This series of small paintings depicts the Cross, symbol to my faith, painted in different ways and with various symmetrical geometric shapes, drawn more technically with ruler and pencil onto prepared panel and then painted thus far with acrylic and gold paint. I look forward to continuing this series.
OILSCAPES SERIES - It is tragic when war is about oil. Political art I created while in art school at PNCA
HELLENIC (GREEK SCULPTURE) STUDIES - These works include studies of historic, Ancient Greek and sculptural figures. This work is about my Hellenic heritage and is very important as a precursor in the study and work of Greek Byzantine Iconography.
